IWD was invited to take part in BASE’s 3rd Annual Fundraising Event hosted by Canada’s one and only Miss Universe Canada 2009! It was a fun event with lots of great people, live entertainment and amazing food! It was also a great opportunity for us to find out more about BASE and what they do. Here is a snippet from their website:

BASE is an association by Mariana Valente; Miss Universe Canada 2009. This is the 5th year that BASE has been giving these children a day of hope and happiness at Christmas time. With your help we can provide these children with a day of fun and send them home with the necessary means to have a Christmas of their own.

The day starts off with a party for the children and their families where they can play, swim and enjoy special treats such as cotton candy and popcorn – which some have never had the chance to experience before. A Christmas feast is provided where the children can eat as much as they like throughout the day while various games are enjoyed. The most anticipated moment of the day is when Santa Clause arrives to give each child a present and time on his lap. Each gift is personalized with their name and includes school supplies for their future. Food baskets are given to their families and the day ends with a train ride through the city.

If you ever get a chance to attend the event next year I would high recommend it.

Every Minute Accounted For

When Kris White read an article in the Spring 2008 issue of On Board about the skills shortage, a bulb went on. The piece, which recounted how Henry Ford broke down the assembly of the Model T into 8,000 distinct tasks, inspired White to research Ford’s methods. “Ford put a stopwatch to everything,” says White, CEO of the four-person International Web Development Corporation. “He wanted to know that every process was as efficient as possible.” So does White. This March, he started quantifying the time of each task performed by his team. With a benchmark, and the ability to compare the efficiency of staff members, productivity quickly improved — to the point that the firm completed two months worth of work in just one month. White reports that business has grown even during the recession and that, because of better efficiency, the company has the capacity to take on much more work as demand increases. “We like to know how every minute is accounted for,” says White. “Our bids are aggressive, because we have pages of statistics on previous results. So every service we offer we’re profitable on, and every bid that goes out, we know we’ll be the most competitive.”

I did quite a bit of research before getting to this ‘who we are’ thing. I read a lot of these on other company’s websites to get a feel for what is normally said here, and I have made two discoveries in doing so:

I would LOVE to be like a lot of these companies
I would NOT WANT to be like a lot of these companies
The other thing I really noticed is that after reading most of them I still didn’t care about many of them. For the most part they read as though they were cut and pasted, bit by bit from the same cookie cutter template. All the right buzzwords were there: reliable, creative, trustworthy, responsible, cutting edge, etc and so on. Yawn.

This made me think that this exercise, perhaps, is a little bit meaningless. What else would anyone say: we’re a little too expensive, we’re still learning, we’re known to screw up every now and then but we really try hard? Doubtfully. Do the ‘who we are’ pages actually entice people to call because of what they say?

So here it is; while we are “reliable, creative, trustworthy, responsible, cutting edge, etc and so on”, it really isn’t WHO we are. We are more.

Who we are is a company that enjoys what we do. We like coming to work every day. We have fun. We learn something new every day and can’t wait to learn more. We consider ourselves partners with our clients and celebrate their successes. We’re casual but professional. We ask questions when we don’t know something and admit we don’t know everything. We listen to music. We wear comfortable clothing and sensible footwear. We are polite and actually care about the people we work with. We have pets and love animals. We separate the wheat from the chaff (I don’t even know what that means but I love saying it!). We love movies and spending time with our families. We are people who treat people as we wish to be treated.
